Physicians
Mark R. Meese, M.D.
Dr. Meese was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended school in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Oklahoma and attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at the OUHSC Tulsa campus. Dr. Meese is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has served as Chairman of the Oklahoma Chapter.
Dr. Meese has been in the practice of General Surgery at Surgical Associates since 1990. He has extensive experience in minimally invasive procedures for hernia repair, gallbladder removal, solid organ removal and endocrine surgery. Dr. Meese adopted minimally invasive hernia repair at its inception and has trained and taught many surgeons in the technique.
Kevin T. Fisher, D.O.
A native of Kiowa, Kansas, Dr Fisher received his undergraduate degree in Medical Technology from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He earned his medical degree from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSU-COM) in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he received the Provost Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. He completed his residency in General Surgery at OSU-COM at Tulsa Regional Medical Center. Dr. Fisher was in private practice in Woodward, Oklahoma prior to joining Surgical Associates in 2002.
Dr Fisher is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology.
Dr Fisher’s special interests include Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery and their application in treating diseases of the liver, pancreas and the digestive tract, as well as the surgical treatment of cancer. He is active in all aspects of general surgery.
Michael W. Griffin, D.O.
A native Tulsan, Dr. Griffin graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. He earned his medical degree from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following an internship at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Griffin received five years of training in General Surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa, where he earned the Crimson Apple Award for excellence in education.
Dr. Griffin is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He joined Surgical Associates in 2004. Dr. Griffin is active in all aspects of general surgery and has extensive experience in dealing with complex hernia surgery and abdominal wall repair. He specializes in the most advanced techniques of hernia surgery, repair and treatment.
Christopher L. Cole, D.O.
A native of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Dr. Cole graduated from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where he majored in Chemistry. He earned his medical degree from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa. Dr. Cole completed a traditional internship and residency at Tulsa Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Cole was active in the practice of family medicine for eight years. He served for two years as Chief of Aviation Medicine at Reynolds Army Community Hospital at Fort Sill. Dr. Cole joined Surgical Associates in 2005.
Dr. Cole is active in all aspects of general surgery. He has a special interest in bariatric surgery and laparoscopic surgery.
Brandon D. Varnell, M.D.
A Tulsa area native, Dr. Varnell earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from University of Central Oklahoma and his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. After medical school, Dr. Varnell completed his residency at the University of Missouri Kansas City Department of Surgery.
Dr. Varnell joined Surgical Associates in July 2008 after completing a fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center that focused on minimally invasive surgery and advanced laparoscopy techniques. His special interests are the treatment of patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and bariatric surgery.
Christopher Sutterfield, M.D.
A native Tulsan, Dr. Sutterfield earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma. He earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Tulsa. Dr. Sutterfield completed his residency training in General Surgery at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Dr. Sutterfield practiced at Surgical Associates for three years following his training, then he spent six years practicing surgery in Dalton, Georgia at Hamilton Medical Center. He returned to Surgical Associates in January 2009 and is active in all aspects of general surgery, specializing in laparoscopic, robotic and dialysis access surgery.
Bryce W. Murray, M.D.
Dr. Murray is a native Oklahoman. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, graduating magna cum laude. Dr. Murray received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa. He completed his residency in General Surgery from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, where he served as Chief Resident.
Following residency, Dr. Murray held the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery at University of Texas Southwestern/VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas, Texas and as Assistant Professor of Surgery for the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa.
Dr. Murray joined Surgical Associates in 2014 after completing a fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Colon and Rectal Clinic of Orlando in Orlando, Florida, where he acquired state of the art training in minimally invasive colon surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery; he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr. Murray is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. Murray’s special interests are laparoscopic and robotic surgery and their application in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and colon and rectal cancer.
Addison Roberts, D.O.
Dr. Roberts graduated with a dual degree from the University of Oklahoma in Zoology Biomedical Sciences and Microbiology. Dr. Roberts then earned his medical degree from A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his General Surgery residency at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, Michigan and his fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery with Florida Surgical Specialists in Brandenton, Florida.
Dr. Roberts is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He returned to his hometown of Tulsa in 2022 and joined Surgical Associates. He has a broad focus in general surgery with an emphasis on hernias, endocrine, colorectal and foregut surgery.
Francisco Guerra Jr., M.D.
Dr. Guerra earned his undergraduate degree in Physiology, with a minor in Spanish, from the University of Arizona and his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Guerra completed his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. He then went on to complete his fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Dr. Guerra joined Surgical Associates in September 2023. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgeons. His special interests are bariatric surgery and advanced gastrointestinal surgery. Dr. Guerra speaks Spanish fluently.
Pauli Whipple, M.D.
Dr. Whipple was born and raised in Oklahoma. She received her bachelor’s degree in Physiology from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Whipple then earned a Master of Business Administration and medical degree from Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Whipple completed her residency in General Surgery from the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine in Tulsa. During residency she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society to recognize her excellence in clinical care, compassion and dedication as a physician.
Dr. Whipple completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Indiana. In 2024 she returned to Oklahoma and joined Surgical Associates. She has a special interest in robotic surgery and treating colorectal cancer patients. Dr. Whipple is passionate about issues related to healthcare disparities and access among underserved rural populations.
